Clinton Lawyers Claim New Chandra Mystery Stalker
Two lawyers with ties to disgraced ex-president Bill Clinton claimed late
Tuesday that Washington, D.C. police have dismissed Cong. Gary Condit as a
prime suspect in Chandra Levy's disappearance and are now focusing on an
alleged mystery stalker who may have abducted the missing intern.
Appearing on CNN's "Larry King Live," Susan McDougal's former Whitewater
attorney Mark Geragos and lead Democratic House impeachment lawyer Julian
Epstein floated the new information, citing only anonymous police sources
and unidentified reporters working on the case.
Earlier this month Geragos hid the fact that his current client, Roger
Clinton, had a $1,200 per week cocaine habit at the same time he was
telling a California court that Clinton had been set up by police in
February on charges of driving under the influence.
Last week Geragos finally confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Clinton
had entered a drug rehab center in July for his cocaine addiction.
Despite his eroding credibility, the Clinton Whitewater/DUI lawyer took the
lead Tuesday night, insisting to Larry King that the focus of the Chandra
Levy investigation was now centered on a suspect other than Condit.
"The fact of the matter is that the investigation has steered away from
Gary Condit. The investigation has actually targeted somebody else,"
Geragos told King.
"(Levy family attorney) Billy Martin's investigators have targeted somebody
else. There is, as Julian and I were discussing off the air, there is three
or four people, but from what I hear there is specifically one person that
they have focused in on.... Gary Condit is yesterday's news."
House impeachment lawyer Epstein endorsed Geragos' new information.
"For several weeks now we have known that the police are actually
proceeding on three or four other leads that have nothing to do with Gary
Condit, and as Mark says tonight, it seems now that the police are really
beginning to focus on one person in particular that has, again, no
connection to Gary Condit."
When King pressed Epstein on the identity of the new suspect, the
Democratic lawyer replied, "Well, there have actually been rumors now for
several weeks that they are actually talking about another person who she
had had regular contact with."
But despite Epstein's characterization of the new information as "rumors,"
Geragos insisted his scoop was solid.
"The police know for a fact that there is somebody else that's there, that
that somebody else who was there who they are investigating was somebody
who was affiliated with the gym where (Chandra) worked out, (and) that that
person was stalking her."
The Clinton-McDougal attorney continued to characterize the alleged new
suspect as a "stalker."
"There is someone who she perceived to be stalking her. And they know it,
and they've invested quite a bit of investigative time into following this
up. And the idea that the reason the police are so frustrated by this is
that people won't let go of the Condit thing."
By the end of the broadcast, King revealed the results of CNN's own efforts
to confirm Geragos' scoop.
"By the way, CNN News can't confirm there is another suspect," he said.
"You are saying you have knowledge of this, right?"
"CNN News can't confirm it?," Geragos sputtered. "CNN news should call up
the police department.... the police department will say they've got at
least three and that they've got one specific who was a person that
they..."
"OK," King interrupted, "because we couldn't confirm."
