-Caveat Lector-

This is a copy of the letter I sent to Cablevision. I'll let you know
if I get a response.

I have 2 problems with the case, both of which concern
Cablevision's behavior.

First, Cablevision's lawyers should have contested not only the
secrecy clause of the request from the government for private
information, but also the request itself. Did the feds have a
warrant, or were they on a fishing expedition? Every day, the
Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, protecting us from
illegal searches and seizures, is being eroded. Please do not
contribute to this erosion.

Second, just how much monitoring of Internet usage does
Cablevision do? Does length of connect time and amount of
data being passed through the modem indicate criminal
activity? And what about patterns? Does Cablevision monitor
which Web sites are visited, do they read email? That is
nobody's business except the person using the computer. It's
the same as if you were to park a car outside my home and
photograph who comes in and out my door; a despicable
invasion of privacy.

Solution: First, stop monitoring which sites people visit, if you
do so now. An honesty counter on your site will tell you how
many hits you get, they are free with most web-building
software.

Second, get together with the other cable Internet providers
around the country and REFUSE to comply with the Feds'
unconstitutional request. There is safety in numbers, and the
cable companies have a powerful lobbying group. Use it for a
good cause. If you are willing to stand on principle, it may
mean more customers will come your way.
