Environmental Education: Fact or Fiction
By Charles R. MiVille, Washington, D.C., correspondent

It's a scary scenario: New York City flooded by global warming, acid rain
destroying our lakes and rivers. Most scientists would call this science
fiction, but it's being taught in many public schools as fact.

If your child comes home from school and tells you that soon there will be
no more elephants or monkeys, you can thank the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). In fact, it comes right from textbooks that are funded by the
EPA.

"(Y)ou have young children frightened . . . worried . . . poorly informed,
thinking they're learning scientific information when they really aren't,"
said Jane Shaw, co-author of the book, Facts, Not Fear. "(Y)ou have a bad
situation that's only going to get worse as they get older."

Shaw said the EPA is using fear tactics.

"They want to keep kids worried and anxious so they will continue to
support Environmental Protection Agency actions which, unfortunately, are
often enforcement type actions," Shaw said.

Michael Sanera, a co-author with Shaw, said the EPA is part of a coalition
that includes a host of activist groups.

"The goal is to activate kids, and so what you see in tandem is bad
information about the environment placed right next to urging kids to do
something about it," Sanera said.

Congress stopped funding EPA school programs five years ago, but the money
could come back in the latest education bill.

"There is support among certain House members to pull that out because it's
not germane at all to the president's education bill," Sanera said.

According to Shaw and Sanera, the EPA has been indoctrinating teachers to
its radical agenda for years.

According to a recent study, 60 percent of the teachers who are using
textbooks produced by environmental groups claim they don't see any bias.
They also don't distinguish between environmentalists and environmental
activists.

TAKE ACTION: Please contact your representative and senators and ask them
to make sure that no funding be included in the education bill for EPA
school programs.
