Video Suicide Note Ends Calif. Murder Spree

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - A disgruntled California security guard
suspected of murdering five people in a weekend rampage killed himself
early on Monday after a wild shoot-out with police that injured two others,
officials said.

Joseph Ferguson, 20, was found slumped over the wheel of a car stolen from
his final two victims -- a couple he terrorized and forced to make a video of
his final angry words to the world before shooting the husband to death. He
released the wife with instructions to hand the video over to police.

``I giveth and I taketh,'' a grim-looking Ferguson said in the video, portions of
which were released by police on Monday. ''And that's how it goes in
this...life.''

Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas said Ferguson -- described by police
as a troubled man with possible links to white supremacist groups -- had
looked ready to launch an even more horrific bloodbath.

``The guy's a nut. He was bent on killing more people, and thank God that we
were able to stop him,'' Blanas told reporters. ``He had all kinds of weapons --
AK-47s, handguns, shotguns, you name it,'' Blanas said.

The violent end to Ferguson's crime spree came just 11 days after the
capture of another Sacramento-area man, 27-year-old Nikolay Soltys, who
had sparked a nationwide manhunt after allegedly stabbing six family
members to death, including his pregnant wife and three-year-old son.

Police said Ferguson was suspended from his job at Burns International
Security last week for apparently vandalizing the car of his former girlfriend,
another Burns employee, who had recently broken off their relationship.

On Saturday, Ferguson made threatening phone calls to former co-workers --
marking the start of what police say was a 24-hour trail of terror that wound
through some of the same neighborhoods still reeling from the Soltys case.

Late on Saturday, police were alerted to gunfire at a city equipment yard,
where two female Burns Security employees, including the former girlfriend,
were found shot and killed inside a guard booth.

SHOOTING AT MARINA

Shortly after that more shooting was reported at a nearby marina, where two
other people, including one Burns Security guard and a man later identified
as a city employee, were killed, police said.

``These victims as well received multiple wounds, also it appeared that an
automatic assault weapon was used,'' Sacramento Police Chief Arturo
Venegas said on Monday.

In a stolen security truck, Ferguson then apparently drove to the city zoo,
where he cornered yet another Burns Security employee. Instead of killing
her, Ferguson is said to have left her handcuffed to a tree and drove off in her
car.

Police say Ferguson then drove to the home of a Burns supervisor and took
the man and his wife hostage, holding them for some 12 hours.

After tying up and gagging the man, Ferguson forced the woman to make a
video tape in which he outlined his plans to kill police officers and Burns
employees and vowed to commit suicide to avoid capture.

``For all the victims I apologize to your families,'' Ferguson said in the video.

``Obviously it don't mean ... to you ... You'd just as soon see I die so I'm gonna
see fit that that happens ... either a bullet to my brain or ... cops will kill me.''

After releasing the woman with instructions to give the video to police,
Ferguson then took off in the couple's car and was eventually sighted late on
Sunday evening by a motorist who called police.

The shoot-out Ferguson had apparently prepared for came quickly.

California Highway Patrol units, responding to the motorist's alert, launched a
high-speed chase and eventually cornered Ferguson in a restaurant parking
lot, engaging in a gunbattle in which one CHP officer and a passing motorist
were wounded, police said.

Police said on Monday that Ferguson had compared himself to Soltys and
Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh (news - web sites), and that police
had found white supremacist literature and a cache of weapons in a search
of his home.

``We recovered at that time an extensive amount of weaponry, including
some very disturbing literature ... that provided us with a good idea of his
state of mind,'' Venegas said, adding that Ferguson had vowed he was
``going to go out in a bigger way than Soltys and McVeigh.''
