New York City consists of 5 divisions called boroughs. Manhattan, which is usually what people mean when they say "New York City" or "The City", is one of the 5 boroughs. The other four are Queens, where the plane crash took place, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Brooklyn and Queens are situated on Long Island. Staten Island and Manhattan are separate islands unto themselves. The Bronx is part of the U.S. mainland, at the end of a peninsula. The Hudson River is on the west side of Manhattan Island, and the East River is on the east side. The famous river crossings: Holland Tunnel (near Ground Zero), the Lincoln Tunnel (midtown Manhattan) and the George Washington Bridge (uptown Manhattan), cross the Hudson River, connecting Manhattan to New Jersey. The boroughs are informally divided into neighborhoods and districts, mostly by ZIP code, much like big cities all over the world. Far Rockaway is a neighborhood in Queens, with its own ZIP code.
