The evidence in question? The New York area air traffic controller tapes from the morning of September 11. A correspondent reminded me today that no one needed to lift a finger to make those tapes disappear. All they needed to do was do nothing for 14 days and they would disappear as if by magic. Have you heard anything of the disposition of the air traffic controller tapes from that morning? Not the cockpit recorders, but the recordings of what was said in the control towers of Albany, Newburgh, Newark, LaGuardia and JFK airports as two airliners veered dramatically off course and flew straight down the Hudso n River, low, and into the World Trade Center towers. If those recordings were not specifically requested by the National Transportation Safety Board within the 14 day period after 9/11, and no one else demanded them, they're gone - forever. If the tapes exist, why haven't we heard about them? Why is it that the news media which took an almost pornographic delight in replaying scenes of the crashes and their aftermath has had nothing to say about these tapes? In a 9-13 press release, the NTSB states that the 9-11 investigation was taken over by the FBI and that the NTSB would provide technical assistance with "cockpit voice recorders and flight data recorders." No mention was made of air traffic control tapes. http://www.ntsb.gov/Pressrel/2001/010913.htm In contrast, for the 11/12/01 American Airlines crash in Queens, the NTSB lists the full range of investigative services it planned to bring to bear: "...among the investigative groups that comprise the NTSB team are Operations, Witnesses, Structures, Power Plants, Systems, **** Air Traffic Control ****, Weather, Aircraft Performance, Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder." http://www.ntsb.gov/Events/2001/AA587/default.htm >From my correspondent: "as i learned when investigating AS261, after any aircraft accident, the 24 hour controller tapes are retained for 14 days. but, if no one requests those tape records for the purpose of the aircraft accident[catastrophe] investigation, the tape is returned to service and re-used.as far as i have been able to determine, the ntsb never requested the tape of the LA controllers talking to AS261. as a consequence, that record was effectively d estroyed. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CONTROLLER TAPES THAT INVOLVED ALL THE COMMERCIAL AIRCRAFT THAT CRASHED ON 11/9/01?
