Passengers and crew members of American Airlines Flight 63 helped subdue the man, who became violent when confronted. The man appeared to be an Arab carrying a false British passport issued in Belgium three weeks ago in the name of Richard Reid. WBZ-TV (Ch. 4) reported him as being 28-years-old. "I'm told the flight attendant was drawn to him by the smell of sulfur from a lit match, and then challenged him as to what he was doing," said Thomas Kinton, interim executive director of the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs the airport. Kinton said that the shoes contained "improvised explosives" capable of doing damage and that they were "C-4 in nature," although that was not a certainty. Wires were observed protruding from the shoe, WBZ-TV reported. Passengers and crew members subdued the man. WBZ-TV said that doctors on board the plane managed to inject the suspect with sedatives. "The flight attendants were hurt during this, and yelled for help from other passengers and received that help from other passengers on board the aircraft," Kinton said. The intervention on the flight "appeared to have prevented something very serious from occurring," Kinton added. The plane radioed for an emergency landing at approximately 1 p.m., according to WBZ-TV, and was escorted by two F-15 fighter jets to Logan Airport. 185 passengers and 12 crew members were on board the plane.
