Mother suspects vaccines to blame for twins' brain damage; doctors unsure Sevil Hunter RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL 2/16/2002 07:35 pm Doctors do not believe Zachary and David Nikoley’s immunization for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis set off the chain-reaction of spasms the twins experienced after their 4-month shots. The boys’ mother, however, isn’t convinced. Amber Nikoley believes the vaccine is what caused the seizures in her twin boys that ultimately led to their brain damage. “I know in my heart that it had something to do with the immunization,” she said. “Every time I told doctors how I felt, they just pooh-pooh’d the idea. I don’t know why they never wanted to hear about it.” When the boys got their shots, Amber was given informational handouts. Like most parents, she never read the literature that explained the vaccines and risks. On the literature, it states that severe problems can occur from vaccines, but they are rare, striking fewer than 1 out of a million children. Problems can include seizures, coma and brain damage. “They are so rare it is hard to tell if the vaccine causes them,” according to the Centers for Disease Control. Despite the risks, medical professionals say vaccinations are essential. Life-threatening diseases that once caused widespread epidemics have been controlled through immunizations, said Ellen Simms, nursing supervisor with the Washoe District Health Department. “I can’t imagine where we would be without them,” she said. The twins’ doctors say that even if they suspected vaccines were to blame for the boys’ condition, there is no way of ever finding out.
