TZEMACH NEWS SERVICE ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A weekly update of news and events regarding the nation and the people of Israel. Week Ending: 23 February 2002/11 Adar 5762 "Let G-d arise, let His enemies be scattered; And let those who hate Him flee before Him. As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; As wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish before G-d. But let the righteous be glad; let them exult before G-d; Yes, let them rejoice with gladness." Psalm 68:1-3 This Week's Headlines: :: SHARON ADDRESSES NATION :: A VERY BLOODY WEEK :: IDF STRIKES BACK; ISRAEL REACTS :: IDF EASES RESTRICTIONS IN GAZA; ARABS RESPOND WITH MORE ATTACKS :: MYTH AND FACT :: RUBENSTEIN: "JEWS MUST BE ALLOWED TO VISIT THE HOLY SITE" :: VIOLENCE INCREASES; TROOPS DECREASE :: NYC MAYOR SUPPORTS PA/PLO? :: A JERUSALEM INSIGHT: FAITH AND FEAR :: SHARON ADDRESSES NATION: Amid growing concern among Israelis that their government was losing its direction and their army was losing its edge, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon gave a rare, prime-time broadcast address to his nation Thursday night that said almost nothing at all. Both the Left and the Right in Israel agree that Sharon's speech fell short of any relevant mark, worth talking about. Sharon reiterated that he was against war, in favor of Israeli unity, against Palestinian terror, and a supporter of "the right solutions at the right time." He hinted that he might make some concessions to the Palestinians in the short term, such as letting Yasser Arafat out of Ram'Allah, in return for the arrest of three of the four men alleged to have carried out or ordered the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehav'am Ze'evi last October. But he also hinted very vaguely that he was not considering the removal of Israeli settlements as part of long-term solution to the conflict with the Palestinians. However, he did unveil his new plan to build hundreds of kilometers of mine fields, fences and obstacles, that would effectively cut off the hundreds of thousands of Jews in Yesha (Judea, Samaria, and Gaza) from the rest of the country and create the unofficial state of Palestine. The problem with the fence is that the PLO already has the missiles and rockets and mortars to shoot over the fence. Meanwhile, ARUTZ-7 has learned that Sharon has asked the United States to give Israel a "green light" for strong action against the Palestinian Authority. The request specified that Israel does not wish to re-conquer all of the PA/PLO-controlled territories, but only to carry out a more limited offensive. A senior source in Sharon's office says that coalition constraints prevent him from taking stronger action against the PA/PLO, and that the Likud ministers are not helping in this area. "They are very tough in interviews with the media, but at government meetings they barely open their mouths," he said. However, in a related story, ISRAEL RADIO diplomatic correspondent Yoni Ben Menachem reported Wednesday that sources in PM Sharon's Office say that the United States never asked Israel to show restraint in its actions against the Palestinians. Until Ben Menachem's report the argument that the US was asking Israel to restrain its activities as it may interfere with American "coalition building" in preparation for an attack on Iraq was the key excuse used by Israeli officials to explain why Israel could not take decisive action against the Palestinians. ............................ :: A VERY BLOODY WEEK: On Saturday night, February 16, a Palestinian terrorist attacked Israeli teenagers sitting at a pizzeria in the town of Karnei Shomron. The suicide bomber killed Keren Shatsky and Nehemia Amar, both 15 years old. Several other teens, hit by flying nails placed in the bomb, remain in very critical condition. The Al Aqsa Brigades, the terrorist organization linked to Yasir Arafat's Fatah movement, said it was behind Sunday's failed attack in northern Israel in which two terrorists were killed -- one in a gun battle with police and the second in an explosion he set off while being pursued by officers. The Fatah organization Monday bragged openly that Sunday's car bomb attack in northern Israel was known as its "heroic Operation Hadera." The Palestinian comments made it clear that the Palestinian bombers had planned to attack the Israeli city of Hadera (and not a military base, as reported by the ASSOCIATED PRESS), which has suffered more than half a dozen major terror attacks in the last year. A lone Palestinian terrorist murdered three Israelis at the Kisufim Crossing entrance to Gush Katif in a well-planned ambush Monday night. The murder victims were Ganei Tal resident Ahuva Amargi, 30, a mother of two; Capt. Mor Elraz of Kiryat Ata; and Sgt. Amir Mansouri of Kiryat Arba. In another attack, Border Guard policeman Ahmed Mazrib, 31, of Beit Zarzir, was murdered when he approached the driver of a stolen car who somehow detonated the very powerful explosives that were inside the car. Had the powerful bomb blown up on a Jerusalem street, many lives could have been lost. Six Israeli soldiers were killed Tuesday, and a seventh sustained serious wounds, in a terrorist attack near the Ayn Arik checkpoint west of Ram'Allah. Another Israeli was not hurt and was an eyewitness to the incident. Arafat's Fatah Tanzim who, in a demonstration of how far they have advanced down the "learning curve", carried out a well orchestrated and executed attack against the Israelis who were apparently in a caravan and a nearby building near the village of Ein Ariq, northwest of Ram'Allah in Yesha. One Israeli civilian was killed and two IDF soldiers and two additional civilians were wounded Thursday when Palestinian terrorists attacked the Baka a-Sharkiya roadblock, located north of Tulkarm. The terrorists drove up to the roadblock in a vehicle with yellow Israeli license plates, got out, and opened fire on soldiers and civilians. One terrorist was killed on the spot. An explosive charge was found on his body, ISRAEL RADIO reported. Valery Ahimeir, a 59 year-old resident of Beth Shemesh, was murdered Friday by gun-fire, north of Jerusalem. "O L-rd, that the enemy has reviled, and a foolish people has spurned Your name. Do not deliver the soul of Your turtledove to the wild beast; Do not forget the life of Your afflicted forever. Consider the covenant; For the dark places of the land are full of the habitations of violence. Let not the oppressed return dishonored; Let the afflicted and needy praise Your Name." Psalm 74.18-21 ............................ :: IDF STRIKES BACK; ISRAEL REACTS: Following the murderous terror attacks against Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers in the recent days, an IDF force struck the Palestinian Police Headquarters in the city of Shechem, an office of Force 17 (the "Presidential Guard") in Ram'Allah, and a structure of the Military Intelligence and Force 17 in the Civil Administration area of Rafah. The Israel Defense Forces carried out a number of operations in the Palestinian territories Tuesday in retaliation for Monday's terror attacks in which four Israelis were killed. Israel Air Force helicopter gunships fired three missiles at the information office of Hamas in the Jabalya refugee camp in the Gaza Strip at around midday Tuesday. "To say that we must return to the negotiating table at this point is total folly." So said Public Security Minister Uzi Landau this evening, adding, "The negotiations of the Oslo process, with Ehud Barak's willingness to give away [practically everything] at its apex, have brought upon us the biggest catastrophe in the history of the State of Israel. We have to behave like the Americans: Before the start of any negotiations, we have to totally wipe out all the terrorism..." The Yesha Council, at an emergency meeting at Karnei Shomron last night, demanded that Prime Minister Sharon immediately put an end to the policy of restraint. "Sharon must urgently defeat the largest terror organization in the world -- the Palestinian Authority," the Council resolved, noting that the last 18 months have proved that it is not enough to thwart specific actions and to carry out limited responses: "An operation to bring down the Palestinian Authority and clean out the territory of terrorists and the terror infrastructure must be carried out." ............................ IDF EASES RESTRICTIONS IN GAZA; ARABS RESPOND WITH MORE ATTACKS: Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and GSS chief Avi Dichter met with PA/PLO officials Muhammad Dahlan and Muhammad Rashid Thursday night. Afterwards, Israel removed the blockades from main Gaza roads, thus allowing free Arab traffic once again between all parts of the Gaza Strip. The blockades were placed after the fatal terrorist attack at Kisufim this past Monday, when three Israelis were murdered. The pattern of "terrorist attack, blockades, remove the blockades, terrorist attack" has repeated itself several times over the past few months. The IDF [Israel Defense Force] also withdrew from a position it took up a week ago near Kfar Darom. The Palestinians responded with three mortar shells on an Israeli community in Gush Katif; no one was hurt. Meanwhile, Marwan Barghouti, a senior leader of Arafat's Fatah faction said on Wednesday that ambushes on Israeli checkpoints in Yesha were set to increase after a raid which killed six soldiers. Barghouti said Tuesday's raid on a checkpoint -- which both Hamas and Fatah said they carried out -- was part of a new strategy adopted by some groups. Barghouti is also head of the Tanzim paramilitary, which is part of Fatah. "You pushed me violently so that I was falling, but the L-rd helped me. The L-rd is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation." Psalm 118.13-14 ............................ *COPYRIGHT NOTICE** In accordance with Title 17 U. S. C.
