without arafat, the united states would lose their largest customer of US-made military equipment. the truth is that as long as palestine exists the united states has an excuse to sell weapons to israel and that if israel ever really wanted to, they could conquer three quarters of the middle east within a fortnight. that, however, is not how realpolitik works. the united states needs a reliable base in the region in case the shit hits the fan. they can station troops in saudi arabia, in egypt, in turkey, but these are not as stable as israel because the only danger here, and it's slight but it's there, is a pan-arabic war against the west. thus, israel is a united states colony. it does what the united states says when the united states says, and, in return, gets special treatment and lots of military equipment. in order to justify their presence, the united states needs an unruly palestinian population to create conflict and a leader either unable or unwilling to stop the violence. yassir arafat fits the bill perfectly. the united states does not negotiate with terrorists unless it is in the interests of the united states. the united states negotiates with terrorists unless it is not in the interest of the united states. in short, the united states does whatever is in the interest of the united states. <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/";>www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
