The Police Complaints Authority was today investigating an incident in which
police officers shot a man carrying a replica gun.

The man, whom police believe to have been involved in a spate of robberies,
was shot in the leg in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, by Merseyside firearms
officers.

At a news conference yesterday Assistant Chief Constable Grahame Parker said
the 27-year-old man was believed to have been involved in a series of armed
robberies on petrol stations, off-licences and bakers' shops in south
Liverpool in the last week.

He said a vehicle thought to have been involved in two further robberies
today in Allerton was spotted by an unarmed police officer in Park Road,
Toxteth this afternoon.

The officer followed it to Upchurch Road and the driver got out of the car
and threatened him before running off.

The man was believed to be armed with a shotgun and firearms officers were
alerted.

Mr Parker said: "The man was subsequently challenged by specially trained
armed police officers who discharged shots at the man.

"He was shot in the leg."

The man was taken to hospital where his condition was "satisfactory", Mr
Parker added.

"I am pleased to say his injuries are not life threatening."

He had been arrested on suspicion of involvement in armed robberies.

The gun was later found to be a replica.

A Police Complaints Authority spokesman said the case had been voluntarily
referred to them by Merseyside Police, and they would now oversee a full
inquiry.
