Arrest after airgun attack

A SIXTEEN-year-old boy has been arrested after an airgun
attack on a Seaham teenager.

Darren Temple, from Deneside, was struck just above his
right eye, as he played tennis in his local park on Tuesday
afternoon.

Doctors told Darren, 16, he could have lost his eye if the
pellet had hit him just an inch lower down his face.

X-rays revealed the airgun pellet was still lodged in his
head, but medics have decided to leave it there, saying
surgery could cary a greater risk.

Yesterday morning a boy from the Dalton Heights area of the
town was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He was questioned at Seaham Police station and has been
released on police bail until early July.

An advice file is now to be sent to the Crown Prosecution
Service which will decide what, if any charges are to be
brought.

----------

That last paragraph pretty much sums it up. This report
( the newspaper covers Chris Mullins constituency) is a
typical example of the long standing lack of will when it
comes to prosecuting teenagers involved in airgun offences.

No doubt Mullin will gleefully add it to his list of offences
whilst once again calling for tighter controls, whether or
not the already substantial sentencing powers available to
the judiciary have been used doesn't matter.

I'd bet the relationship between offence/arrests/charges
with regard airgun offences would make interesting reading.
