Wild West performer loses arm in blast

      BY RUSSELL JENKINS

A WILD West show performer lost an arm when he fell on a
detonating explosive charge in front of an audience of Girl Guides.
John Carr, 51, of Fleetwood, Lancashire, known as Cactus Jack,
was performing with the Arizona Rangers Western Show Team. Spectators
at Waddow Hall, Clitheroe, saw Mr Carr playing his part in a fictional
hold-up, emerging from behind a barricade, getting shot and falling to
the ground.

He missed his cue and fell at the moment that an explosion, used
for special effects to signify a dynamite blast, was triggered. For
some moments the audience believed that the accident was part of the
show.

Mr Carr, who works on supply vessels servicing North Sea oil and
gas platforms and is a member of the Outpost Wild West Club, which
re-enacts cowboy scenes, was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital
but surgeons were unable to save his arm.

Investigators from the Health and Safety Executive have launched
an inquiry.
