Sanhedrin 111: Moshe's response

Dear Kollel,
In today's daf, 111 of Sanhedrin, the gemorah says Moshe complained to
Hashem and asked how he could put the jews through so much pain. Hashem's
response compared him to Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov saying they never
doubted Him, yet Moshe does.
My question is that it seems that is part of the greatness of Moshe.
Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov never complained, but there problems were
always personal - Moshe complained because it was for the nation - he
probably (assumption) would not have complained if it was just for him. It
seems to me that he was great for having the courage to stand befor G-d and
say such things for the nation.. Why does the gemora say it was negative
for Moshe to complain?
