Re: General: Milah of Mitzrayim

Yitzi asked:
>>why did yossef ask the mitzriyim to do bris mila? was he trying to
>>convert them????

The Kollel replied:
>>(a) I remember some say that it was so that the Mitzriyim would not
>>insult his brothers by saying that they are Nimolim, cf. Rashi end
>>va'Yigash (47:21). However recently I have looked and cannot find

>>(b) The Maharal (Gur Arieh) says that Yosef understood that the
>>reason why the Mitzriyim's produce rotted was because they were
>>Areilim. He says that the Targum of Bris is "Kayama" which means
>>lasting. The Mitzriyim who were without Bris, had no chance of

Ephraim Kleinberg comments:

To answer the question about why Yosef made the mitzrim get a bris mila.

i saw a piece by Rav Avigdor Neventzal in his sichos on the parsha
where he raised this question along with the question of why Yosef
uprooted an entire nation of mitzrim from their ancestral lands to
move to other cities(Paroh did not command him to do this), as well
as the gemara in Shabbos that relates that Yaakov was supposed to
come down to Mitzrayim in iron chains, but his zchus allowed him to
come down as 'royalty' to mitzrayim. would yaakov rather have come
down 22 years earlier and not have all the tzuros of not seeing his
son, or go down as 'royalty' and live with tzuros for 22 years?
answers R' Neventzal that Yosefs actions were to prevent assimilation
in any way he could. By making the mitzrim like the Jews, the Jews
would have no reason to feel lower and would keep their identities,
as well Yosef moved around the mitzrim so that his brothers would not
be insulted for being nomads(see Rashi). if Yaakov had come down any
earlier as a slave, it would be disgraceful and the mitzrim would
have had no respect for the family of the Jews.
