Yevamos 026: The Prohibition of a Shaliach Who Brings a Get to Marry the
Divorcee

H. David Levine asks:

It seems unusual, in the midst of this tractate that discusses polygamy so
extensively, that the Gemara discounts the idea that such a messenger might
wish for a second wife. How should the 'rumors' or suspicions touch his
credibility any less on account of his one wife, if he indeed offers to
marry this ??????

H. David Levine, Roanoke, VA; USA

The Kollel replies:

You touch upon a very interesting point. This, and many other Gemaros, is
the basis for the position of Rav Reuven Margaliyos zt”l (most famously
author of Margaliyos HaYam on Sanhedrin)that while it was theoretically
permitted to have two wives until the Cherem of Rabeinu Gershom, in
practice this was already deemed generally unacceptable from the times of
the Mishnah and on (and perhaps earlier).

All the best,

Yaakov Montrose
