Often these modules (and all kernel modules, because of Linux's lack of any 
binary compatibility support), require a rebuild if any kernel reconfiguration 
or patching occurs.

While CE and DVSDK may provide pre-built binaries for convenience, it's good 
practice to get a rebuild of these modules (and other kernel mode drivers) into 
your development flow.
