First of all, if that was unclear, please let me mention that I had no
intent to insinuate that the name changes which were forced to turkish
people in your country are of low importance or whatever. That, for
sure, was not the point of my answer.
As Colin very clearly pointed out, Debian cannot do anything else than
using some standards issued by well recognised standards body,
especially when it comes to very sensitive things like country names.
This is exactly the reason for which I suggested the name change for
"Taiwan" in iso-codes. As far as I know and as far as I have
understood, the "Taiwan, province of China" name is accepted by both
People Republic of China and "Republic of China" ("Taiwan").
More or less, the same happens for FYROM. Konstantinos Margaritis
explained a while ago why this name was highly controversial in the
region. I also pointed some URL explaining the whole history from a
neutral (IMHO) point of view.
The standard is certainly a compromise currently. Let's assume it will
evolve, but in the meantime we need to use the official "short" name
for MK, which is "Macedonia, the former yugoslav republic of".
