I don't want to do this --- it would make the default behavior of git
different from upstream and the change would happen automatically when
the system is upgraded without providing an obvious indication about
how to turn it off.  I also like the upstream default --- black and
white is less distracting.

A .gitconfig in /etc/skel turning on color seems ok in principle if
you want to pursue that, though.  See /usr/share/doc/git/README.source
for instructions.
