I did the experiment myself with vanilla 2.2.1, and it behaves as I say. So, I'm reasonably convinced upstream bug 16209 is behind this. In the absence of further information from the original submitter, I recommend this bug is marked as fixed by 2.2.2-1 and closed. (But I leave actually doing so to the package maintainers.)
