Standardization. As you say it's a convenience feature that just makes it
more complicated to everybody else that righfully expects -p1 patches.

You can just add "&& quilt refresh -p ab" at the end of your command
sequence.

Isn't that enough to address your need? If yes, please close that bug
because I don't believe that it's a good feature to add to dpkg-source.
