OK, figured out what I was doing wrong, I was setting charset but I was setting it after I sourced my address book file. If I set that back to utf-8 beforehand, it works OK. Still, this silly, my LANG environment variable is en_US.UTF-8, and the manual clearly states: Upon startup Mutt tries to derive this value from environment variables such as $LC_CTYPE or $LANG. It must not try very hard, becuase: $ locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LANGUAGE= LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE=C LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8" LC_ALL= Anyway, this is related to bug #865822 after all, and the fact I use "reset all" as the first line of my mutt config, and this new build does not default to utf-8 like the previous build did. -- Jamie Heilman http://audible.transient.net/~jamie/
