upgrading util-linux, when did su to root, /usr/sbin wasn't in PATH like
happened with earlier util-linux.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

tried running 

. /etc/profile

after su to root

   * What was the outcome of this action?

. /etc/profile set the correct PATH

   * What outcome did you expect instead?
