Well that's not what my testing shows; after testing through various
different approaches, anytime I build an image with qemu-system-x86
4.1 I wind up with corruption, the version of qemu-utils tools used at
any stage doesn't seem to matter.  Using qemu-system-x86 3.1 with any
version of qemu-utils tools works OK.

qemu-img check never reports any problems in any combination.
