FWIW my suggestion for you to contact upstream was not simply a way to push this away from being my problem, but I honestly think this is the best way to get the issue solved. The util-linux upstream developers are good at being solution focused and happy to implement things. It should help that you have a good description of both the use-case and example commands. So if you have any motivation to ever see this solved on the util-linux side I would again warmly recommend that you directly contact upstream in case they have any followup questions for you (and because using any middle man as a messenger will just be extra annoyance for all involved parties). Someone else could have the discussion with upstream but then there's always the possibility that it solves one issue without fulfilling all your needs. It's better to take up any additional issues directly while the discussion is already ongoing to get your use-case fully covered.
