Gary had an idea here... Pidgin generally only uses child processes for DNS. Is it possible that you have some NSS plugin that is doing this?

Specifically, do you have libnss-mdns installed? I do, and I still can't reproduce the problem. But maybe you can try removing it to see if that fixes it? (Obviously, you can reinstall it either way.)
