I was stumbling accross this bug and like to query more information why you need
a static library? Can you expand on your use case and why a shared library
won't do it
for you?

In Debian we usually avoid packaging static libraries, expect if the library is
designed
to be used statically, so a good reason would be appreciated :)

Static libraries have -- especially in a context of distributions -- quite a
lot of downsides,
For example this package very often provides updates due to security issues
which are much
easier to handle if the library is a shared one.
