Yes, I do eventually plan on trying a little disassembly followed by swabbing 
with alcohol anything that looks like a lens. I doubt the laser is worn-out, I 
haven't used the thing that much.

Mine: MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-815A
Nothing gradual about the process, either, one day it did burns reliably and 
the next time I tried, nada. I burn CDs very rarely though, and have no idea 
how much time had passed.

Burning for a Linux-newbie friend, honest! :-) I've got five old Thinkpads all 
running Etch. I try to avoid derivatives.
