I'm sorry that no-one has replied to you about this bug before. It may come as no surprise to you that it's too late to do anything about upgrades from woody now. I'm pretty sure that the problem is not present in a sarge->etch upgrade, at least here it works fine. I'm taking the liberty of closing the bug with the etch version.
