Same thing here - using "make-kpkg linux-image" without any problems, with vanilla kernels from 2.6.21-rcX to current 2.6.27-rc9. I am not using initrd/initramfs stuff but compile in everything needed to boot (filesystem support and hdd controller drivers). Does it have to do with initrd/initramfs?
