Even though you may have solved your problem with elinks, but links seems to have the same problem in later versions as well. --- I created the file sup.html:
<html><head></head><body> 2<sup>48</sup> </body></html> I opened it with "links sup.html" command, and links showed 248 instead of 2^48. (I have checked that <sup> tag in that file works with other browsers.) --- I was running Debian 5.0.7 (lenny) with Linux Kernel 2.6.26-2-686.
