But as the nvidia-settings package is built from free source code, you might want to try the binary built by nvidia. Download the driver *.run file from ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/ to a temporary directory and run it with the --extract-only command line option so that it does not start the installer. The nvidia-settings binary can be found in the root of the tree that is being extracted.
