I have exactly the same situation here. It says in README.Debian: The Debian gallery2 package does not include the uploadapplet, slideshowapplet, remote, or panorama modules nor the DB2 storage support. This support can be re-enabled using the module downloader built into Gallery2. And the issue is that gallery2 is trying to use the remote module. So go to site admin, then select "plugins" from the left menu, "Get More Plugins" and install the remote plugin. Then it works!
