A follow-up to this. Reverting the HDTV resolutions patch
(http://cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/vgabios/vbetables-gen.c?root=vgabios&r1=1.5&r2=1.6
 )
makes the problem to go away.

Note that with the patch applied, the mentioned ubuntu image which
I used for testing --

actually behaves differently. Without that patch, it boots into
full-screen mode where on the left there's a list of language
choices and on the right, larger part, two large buttons "install"
and "try". With this patch in place, it boots into a very small
screen showing only language selection, and when done, that screen
gets replaced with the install menu. I can only guess it is done
in order to fit everything in a small screen, so the installer is
unable to set the screen resolution properly.

Without the HDTV patch, the maximum resolution shown by this very
test guest is 1024x768, so it is difficult to say what is the
actual improvement. I tried to remove 1280x768 mode (introduced
by this patch), and now my test guest behaves sanely at 1280x720
resolution (choosen by default).

But to be fair, I've no idea what to blame. vesa driver? seabios?
qemu? The added modes looks correct, but the resulting behavour
is obviously not.

Thanks,

/mjt
