that's wrong, I have been using Sylpheed(the official one) for a long time, nevery meet such problems. maybe it is your configurations problem of :
1) GTK (< 2.0) 2) Sylpheed 3) XIM (environment variable) 4) input method (i'm using SCIM)

As far as I know, sylpheed-gtk1 uses a gtkstext control to display mail content. This control is written by its own, There is not XIM support in it.
Haven't tried sylpheed-gtk2. Don't know whether it is the same reason.
