I use -a (or -A) very, very rarely.

(Not that I don't agree that the concept of hidden files should be
replaced by using ~/etc/ for "dotfile", but when we do this, we
should start fixing other hysterical raisins as well. Gobolinux
made a nice start in that regard, for example. But I think it is
out of scope for Debian.)
