After some informal research:
<.> is more traditional and still used quite often.
<space> is gaining popularity fast. I'd say it's used more or less as often as <.>
today, probably because it causes less confusion with the English usage.

So it seems it should probably still be <.> for now, though I'd prefer <space>
personally.
