nouveau refuses to be blacklisted:

# echo 'blacklist nouveau' > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf

Since I my last apt-get update / apt-get upgrade, I can see something
on the console now:

Starting the hotplug events dispatcher: udevd
Synthesizing the initial hotplug events...done.
Waiting for /dev to be fully populated... <== timeout here
udevadm settle - timeout of 180 seconds reached, the event queue contains:
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.4/0000:05:00.3 (1260)
done (timeout).
