Debe ser que no tendrás un sources.list completo. Deberías tener unas
líneas parecidas a estas:
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian potato main contrib non-free
deb http://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US potato/non-US main non-free
La url puede ser diferente. Debes hacer un "apt-get update" de vez en
cuando para actualizar las listas de paquetes.
No se me ocurre nada más.
