I installed debian 1.3 on my thinkpad 760xl and as I recall it wasn't that bad if you had the external floppy drive using a port replicator. so that's about extra $300 or $400 or something (I don't remember) but the drive was (and is) recognized by debian instantly and then I was able to install the whole thing in one shot.
I used the tecra disks, by the way.
