Thanks to all who replied.  Just thought that I'd say David Zanetti pointed
me towards the program "screen", which is a little better suited for my
purposes, as it allows the process to be resumed and interfered with, while
nohup <command> & renders the command inaccessible after i've left the
initial shell.
