There is a different utility for katakanji etc input processing, remapping the keyboard etc, but I don't recall the name of it, sorry.
But with canna running, emails & web pages using those character sets generally display just fine. Being a font junkie, I've spent the last 6 years collecting fonts, and the list that firefox opens in the prefs is probably 2 to 3 screens high, and includes lots of them that I couldn't pronounce with a gun to my head. I suspect that if you install the appropriate i8n language packs, you will get enough of those fonts to be functional.
