I actually used extra partitions to store the copy and checked that I could boot it. And it was well worth it. I ended up booting it and using it to make *another* copy after my first upgrade attempt ran aground. Except for the two times I rebooted to a different partition, my users didn't notice anything special going on during the upgrade!
