Yes, this works. You have a working system. If so, then it's working for you, and that's the best anyone can ask for. When I do an install, I unselect "standard" as well, and I use the net-install disk image. This gives me a _very_ minimalist install, but it also means the fewest dependencies when I point to "Unstable" rather than "Stable". If you're using an Etch install disk, and staying with Etch, then you don't have to do any extraordinary efforts at all. Just stay with the install disk until your system is running the way you like, _then_ point to the online repositories so that all you'll need to get are the updated packages, especially if you're using the DVD image. You should already have pretty much every package you "need". If you find "vague" references, it's very likely that it's to things that only apply to the situation the writer has.
