What kind of symbols do you wnat to render? Anyone of these?

If so, in GNOME you can enter unicode characters with this combo:

right ctrl+shift+u (release the keys) [+ code] [enter]

I.e., 

To get "┛" I have to type "ctrl+shift+u+251B"
To get "╠" I have to type "ctrl+shift+u+2560"
