Similarly, why should the location of the $HOME address be predefined? If so, would a $HOME variable be needed at all? Besides, I am using my configuration described since about 10 years, without any side effects observed. My window manager, icewm, wasn't disturbed either. The only possible caution, I could think of: I didn't deal with multimedia, due to my limited hardware in the past and due to my limited interest so far at present.
