I've newly bought a laptop (details at end) & installed Jessie 8.2.
All's well except that I have no sound. I've done quite a lot of online
research but got nowhere. I'm looking for ANY other practical ideas,
please.

In my experience, a good work-around is to use an external, usb audio
interface, such as the Lexcon Alpha, which costs about $50 and provides
several significant benefits over on-board sound, whether for laptop or
desktop. The Alpha is powered off the usb, and typically "just works".

I agree, I'm using nothing but USB sound devices now. The built-in sound on my laptop sux, so I use USB headphones when I travel with it. I also use them on my desktop, plus a 7.1 sound device, and either works a charm switching between them with pavucontrol. I spent less than $30 each. Happy happy. Ric
