My apologies for not providing that information earlier.

I was able to resolve the issue by using "acpi=off single" on the grub boot
line to get back into the rescue prompt.

At that point I updated and upgraded my system to get the latest, attempted
"startx" to start KDE, without success (black screen only).

Rebooted the computer and followed the instructions for Debian Jessie at:
https://wiki.debian.org/ATIProprietary#jessie

This resolved the issue...
