Use "auto" if the network interface is a permanent one, and "allow-hotplug" if it's a transient one (removable, whatever). Interfaces configured as "auto" will be respected by systemd's "network-online.target", meaning any service that you configure to wait for network-online will wait for all "auto" interfaces to be brought up. It will not wait for "allow-hotplug" interfaces.
