After I sent my original complaint, that is what I discovered by grepping
through kernel source.

2.4.2 does NOT have adequate modules for mga.

A package with drm kernel module source would be nice.  I solved the
problem by getting the drm kernel module source from dri.sourceforge.net.
After I clobbered the stock /lib/modules/2.4.2/.../mga.o with the latest
mga.o, everything worked.

Well, I'm OK for now, but someone even more clueless than I might have
problems without at least specific directions for the mga case.
